Short answer: no, Perplexity does not offer free Sonar API credits to the general public, and a Perplexity Pro subscription does not include any. Perplexity's own help centre says a subscription is not required to buy API credits and that API access is a separate service, sold pay-as-you-go. The only real free-credit route is Perplexity for Startups, which was last checked at $5,000 in Sonar API credits for startups that clear a funding and partner bar. Everything else is a consumer discount on the app, not the API.
If you are searching for this because you want to prototype a research or search feature for free, that is a disappointing answer but a useful one. Below is what the API really costs, what the startup program asks for, and the cheaper ways to prototype.
What the Perplexity API costs
Prices from Perplexity's API pricing page, read today. Token prices are per 1M tokens, and each request also carries a fee that depends on the search context size you choose.
| Model | Input | Output | Request fee per 1,000 requests (low / medium / high context) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sonar | $1 | $1 | $5 / $8 / $12 |
| Sonar Pro | $3 | $15 | $6 / $10 / $14 |
| Sonar Reasoning Pro | $2 | $8 | $6 / $10 / $14 |
Two other products worth knowing:
- Sonar Deep Research: $2 per 1M input tokens, $8 per 1M output tokens, $2 per 1M citation tokens, $3 per 1M reasoning tokens, plus $5 per 1,000 search queries.
- Search API: $5.00 per 1,000 requests, or $1.00 per 1,000 in fast mode. It charges per successful request with no token costs.
What that means per 1,000 calls
The part that surprises people is that the request fee often dwarfs the token cost. Take 1,000 Sonar calls with a 1,000 token prompt and a 500 token answer:
- Tokens: 1M input tokens is $1, plus 0.5M output tokens is $0.50. That is $1.50.
- Request fee at low context: $5.
- Total: about $6.50 per 1,000 calls, or roughly 0.65 cents a call.
At high context, the same 1,000 calls come to about $13.50. On Sonar Pro with the same sizes, the tokens cost $3 plus $7.50 and the low context fee adds $6, so about $16.50 per 1,000. Those are our own calculations from the published rates, so run your own numbers with your real prompt sizes.
The takeaway: if you only need ranked web results without synthesis, the Search API at $5 per 1,000 requests, or $1 per 1,000 in fast mode, is the cheapest line item on the page.
Does a Pro subscription include API credits?
No. Perplexity's API billing help article states plainly that a subscription is not required to purchase API credits or use the API, and that API access is available to all users as a separate service. Credits are bought pay-as-you-go from the API console, and you can switch on automatic top-up, which refills your balance when it drops below $2.
Older blog posts and forum threads talk about a monthly API credit bundled with Pro. We could not find that in the current help centre, and the billing article describes the opposite. Treat any post that promises one as stale until you see it in your own console.
The one real free-credit route: Perplexity for Startups
The program, as last checked in our catalog on 24 August 2026:
- $5,000 in Sonar API credits
- 6 months of Enterprise Pro for up to 50 seats
- Companies that have raised less than $20M in equity funding
- Companies under 5 years old
- Associated with one of Perplexity's startup partners (major VCs, accelerators and startup platforms)
A caution about sourcing: Perplexity's startup page did not return the program terms to our fetcher today, so the figures above come from the catalog verification on 24 August and Perplexity's launch coverage, not a fresh read of the page. Open perplexity.ai/startups and confirm the credit amount, the seat count and the partner list before you plan around it.
The partner requirement is the filter that matters. A solo founder with no investor and no accelerator will not clear it, and that is not a rejection, it is just not the program for you. If you are backed by Y Combinator, Techstars or a major fund, ask your platform manager before you apply cold. The application steps are on the Perplexity for Startups listing.
Check the expiry window on the credits once they land. Programs like this often carry a time limit on the credits, and unused credit is worth nothing.
Consumer Perplexity discounts (not API)
These are about the Perplexity app, not the API, and none of them gives you API credits:
- Students and educators: Perplexity verifies students through SheerID and offers an Education Pro plan at a discount. Perplexity's own help centre confirms verification runs through SheerID, but says only "at a discount" without a price or a free period. Our catalog notes a free first month and a roughly $10 per month Education Pro rate, and that the older referral program that stacked free months ended on 31 May 2026. We could not reconfirm the free month today. See the Perplexity student listing.
- Xfinity Rewards: The free year of Pro through Comcast's rewards program stopped taking sign-ups on 29 August 2025, so do not plan around it.
- US government email: A free year of Pro for verified .gov addresses, per the catalog, last checked 14 June.
If you were hoping one of these would fund a product build, it will not. They only cover a human using the app.
How to prototype without paying for Perplexity
If your real need is "answers with citations from the live web", you have other options for the prototype stage:
- Build the retrieval yourself on a free tier. Build a RAG pipeline on free tiers walks through it end to end.
- Use a free LLM key for the synthesis step. Every free LLM API key you can get lists the no-card options.
- Pay for Perplexity only at the point where you need its live search quality. At $6.50 per 1,000 Sonar calls, a serious prototype costs a few dollars, not hundreds.
That last point is the quiet good news. Even with no free credits, the cost of testing is tiny. Spending $10 on credits and being done is a rational choice compared with a week of filling out startup applications.
What to do next
- Decide if you need the API or the app. If it is the app and you are a student, verify with SheerID.
- If it is the API and you are venture-backed, check whether your fund is a Perplexity partner and apply for the startup credits.
- If neither applies, buy a small amount of pay-as-you-go credit and measure your real per-call cost against the table above.
