Short answer: yes, Google is giving eligible US college students aged 18 or over a free year of Google AI Pro, and you have until 31 December 2026 to redeem it. You need a valid payment method at sign-up, eligibility is re-checked every year, and the plan flips to $19.99 per month the moment the free year ends unless you cancel. Google's page says you can cancel anytime.
That is the whole offer in four sentences. The rest of this post is the part the other roundups skip: who is really in, what the card requirement means in practice, and what to do in the first week so the free year does not quietly turn into a $240 charge.
What Google AI Pro actually includes
Straight from Google's student page, the free plan covers:
- 4x higher usage limits in Gemini compared with the free tier
- 5 TB of storage
- Gemini Spark
- Access to Gemini Omni for the year
The page frames the whole thing as a free 1-year Google AI Pro student plan. At list price the plan is $19.99 per month, which is where our catalog's roughly $240 value comes from. If you only use Gemini casually, the 5 TB of storage is arguably the most tangible part. If you live in the chat window, the usage limits are.
Who is eligible, and who is not
This is where most "free Gemini for students" posts get sloppy, so read it carefully.
| Rule | What Google's page says |
|---|---|
| Who | Eligible US college students, ages 18+ |
| New users | Yes |
| Students whose 2025 AI Pro trial expired | Yes, they can qualify too |
| Deadline | Redeem until 31 December 2026 |
| Payment method | Valid form of payment required at sign-up |
| After the free year | Automatically charges $19.99/month |
| Re-verification | Eligibility must be verified each year to maintain access |
Two things to flag. First, Google's page shows a long region selector, which makes it look global. The offer text itself limits the deal to US college students, and we could not confirm a free-year equivalent for other countries. If you are outside the US, check your own country's page rather than assuming this one applies.
Second, the page does not spell out the verification method. Plan on proving enrollment with your school email or enrollment documents. Our catalog entry, last verified in September, describes it as a school email or enrollment proof. If verification fails on your first try, the usual causes are a school that is not in the verification provider's list and using the wrong Google account.
The card requirement is the real catch
Free for a year, but a payment method is required up front. That is a deliberate design: the offer converts to a paid subscription by default. Nothing is wrong with that, but it means the cost of forgetting is $19.99 a month, and that is a lot to a student budget.
Do this the day you redeem:
- Put a calendar reminder 11 months out, two weeks before the renewal date.
- Check whether your bank or card app lets you freeze the card for subscriptions, or use a virtual card if you have one.
- Note the exact end date inside your Google One account settings, not the date you remember.
Cancelling is allowed at any time according to Google. The question is whether you remember to.
Step by step: how to claim it
- Open the official student page at gemini.google/students and sign in with the Google account you want the plan attached to. Use your personal Gmail rather than a school Workspace account, because school accounts can be deleted when you graduate and you will lose the plan and the storage with it.
- Start the student plan and have your school name and enrollment details ready.
- Complete the student verification when prompted.
- Add your payment method. You are not charged during the free year.
- Confirm in your Google One settings that the plan shows Google AI Pro and a renewal date a year out.
- Add the renewal reminder from the section above.
Total time is usually a few minutes if verification goes through automatically.
Is it worth taking if you already use something else?
Take it. It costs nothing and you can cancel. The only real decision is which paid AI plan you keep when the year ends, and you can make that decision with a year of real usage behind you. A few things worth stacking in the meantime:
| Offer | Value | Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Pro, free year | $19.99/mo list, about $240 | US college students, redeem by 31 Dec 2026, card required |
| ChatGPT Plus, 4 free months | $20/mo list | US students, claim by 31 Oct 2026 |
| Codex student credits | $100 | US or Canada, credits expire after 12 months |
| Perplexity Education Pro | Discounted Pro | SheerID verification |
| GitHub Student Developer Pack | $700+ in tools | Needs a school email or proof of enrollment |
Note the ChatGPT deadline, which is earlier than the Google one. If you want both, claim ChatGPT first.
What this does not cover
Google AI Pro is the consumer subscription for the Gemini app. It is not the same thing as Gemini API access for building products, which has its own free tier and its own limits. If you are building an app rather than chatting, read Gemini API free tier 2026 for the real rate limits, and free AI tools and credits for students for the broader list of student AI offers. Do not assume a consumer subscription gives you API credits. It does not.
The honest summary
For a US student, this is one of the best free offers of the year: $240 of list-price value, no application essay, a few minutes of effort. The risks are the card on file and the hard deadline. Redeem it before the end of December, set the reminder, and decide next October whether to keep paying.
Perkstack tracks every student AI offer with the date a human last opened the provider's page, so a deadline that has passed stops being recommended. Browse the full verified student list in the catalog, or create an account to see each offer's application steps.
